Symptoms caused by wheat
When I have wheat, I personally notice:
- Joint pain.
- Lethargy and fatigue.
- Flu-like feelings.
- Poor recovery after exercise.
A quick note on dextrose
Dextrose can be derived from wheat, corn, or potatoes. In my own case, wheat-derived dextrose has triggered hot sweats and anxiety, so I’m especially careful about it.
Symptoms caused by dairy
Dairy can also affect me. The main effects I’ve experienced are:
- Digestive discomfort and bloating.
- Joint pain in the hips and shoulders.
- Itchy skin especially in the evening
Interestingly, I can usually tolerate sheep’s cheese, sheep’s yoghurt, and some unpasteurised cow’s cheeses.
Problems with sweeteners
Certain sweeteners have not suited me, especially sorbitol, xylitol, and maltitol.
- They can cause bloating and cramping.
- They can lead to digestive upset and discomfort.
Additives that affect me
The additives I personally keep away from are:
- Potassium sorbate.
- Monosodium glutamate (MSG).
- Calcium chloride.
Modified starch
I’m also careful with modified starches, including modified maize starch, and I always check labels closely before stocking products.
